This book is just beautiful. A novel of a house, it reads like a set of short stories in which all of the characters are connected by the place.

The novel opens with the building of Blackbird House and the story of the family who lived there first. The story weaves through the next 200 or so years, following the families that live there afterwards, either inheriting or buying the house and the surrounding farm.

Over time, the characters each leave their mark and become part of the house themselve

One of my new favourites. I'v often thought about the premise of this book. The notion of who lived in a house over the years and what their lives were like. Hoffman writes with such vivid beauty about the surroundings and situations with both humour and heartache. It is achingly full of heartfelt experiences that cast a spell on the reader up to the last page. Beautifully crafted and a bookshelf keeper! ...more
