Written in memoir form, this book is really a series of short discussions of the role White Americans in race in the United States. As Irving reviews her own gradually increasing understanding of her racial identity and place in US society, a gradual understanding of the limitations of traditional "good white" views of race, she also ends each short chapter with an interesting thought/discussion question for readers.

This is an excellent book which provokes much thought. The issues raised by Debby Irving are very necessary to air, ponder, discuss, and ultimately use to help bridge some of the racial gaps that are woven into the very fabric of our society. She raises many questions that bring to light hidden problems and issues that need to be resolved before we as a nation of people can come together to find common solutions to our civilization's problems.
