El Deafo’s title and cover put me off at first. Even though I read a fair amount of stand along graphic novels, the image of this one put me off like Martha and eye patches. Once I saw it on book of the year lists, I decided to give it a try. Yah, I was dumb. This book is fabulous! Author and illustrator Cece Bell crafts a charming memoir of her elementary years during which her studies, friendships, and self confidence were greatly affected by sudden, profound hearing loss. Oh, and everyone loo

El Deafo is a graphic memoir detailing Bell's experiences growing up with hearing difficulties. Bell lost much of her hearing at an early age and relied on various hearing aids to amplify sound. Before reading this book, I had never considered the difficulties of having such a disability as a small child. So many people (myself included previous to this read) don't know the best way to interact with someone who has a hearing aid. This book is full of humorous misunderstandings, like when her fri

I read this sweet, feel-good graphic novel for children in one sitting. It is about a girl who goes deaf after childhood meningitis, and her journey to acceptance of herself. El Deafo is a honest story about one girl bunny's experience with deafness. Cece is 4-years-old when she loses her hearing following a bout with meningitis. The story, in graphic novel format, shows some of the physical, educational and social challenges and triumphs Cece faces through 5th grade. The story is based on the author's own childhood. This is a great read for all tween and older readers.

This book is a graphic novel memoir about a girl dealing with the challenges of being deaf and staring at a new school. She struggles with friendships and fitting in. The book was written for kids and I didn't especially love it, but I am glad I read it.
