El Deafo’s title and cover put me off at first. Even though I read a fair amount of stand along graphic novels, the image of this one put me off like Martha and eye patches. Once I saw it on book of the year lists, I decided to give it a try. Yah, I was dumb. This book is fabulous! Author and illustrator Cece Bell crafts a charming memoir of her elementary years during which her studies, friendships, and self confidence were greatly affected by sudden, profound hearing loss. Oh, and everyone loo ...more

El Deafo is a graphic memoir detailing Bell's experiences growing up with hearing difficulties. Bell lost much of her hearing at an early age and relied on various hearing aids to amplify sound. Before reading this book, I had never considered the difficulties of having such a disability as a small child. I read this sweet, feel-good graphic novel for children in one sitting. It is about a girl who goes deaf after childhood meningitis, and her journey to acceptance of herself. El Deafo is a honest story about one girl bunny's experience with deafness. Cece is 4-years-old when she loses her hearing following a bout with meningitis. The story, in graphic novel format, shows some of the physical, educational and social challenges and triumphs Cece faces through 5th grade. The story is based on the author's own childhood. This is a great read for all tween and older readers. ...more

What a great story to highlight a perspective not often seen - it seemed to capture the added complexity of middle school with a difference that others may not understand well, as well as that there are just a lot of personality types to deal with in middle school regardless.
