I FINALLY FINISHED THIS BOOK!!! This would have been 5 stars for me if it hadn't been so long; it would be a great book to take when stranded on a deserted island, when you have all the time in the world to savor each page. But for me, I've got a pile of books next to my bed crying "read me! read me!"
I loved Gaiman's Sandman series (start here: The Sandman, Vol. 1: Preludes and Nocturnes), but I've avoided his more traditional novels, perhaps for fear of being disappointed.

There's a bit of everything in this book, from mythology to fantasy to history to adventures and action and even a bit of fairy tale. Can I give this book 6 stars? How about 7? Run, dont walk to your nearest emporium of bookage and READ this NOW!!! On my top 5 ever with Hitchiker's trilogy and Illuminati and the Harry Potters and the Phantom Tollbooth. (Wow, I didnt know what my top 5 were until just now. Can I count all 7 Harry Potter as 1? But I digress.) Neil Gaiman is the master. Read the late 80's Sandman comix...but I still digress. This book taps into the deep mythos with a story that spits you out reeling at the end.

Read the book before you watch the show
Still pondering my reaction to this .... the first half can be daunting and push you away because of slow moments, but the first part is absolutely essential to understanding the second half. This is a book I will re-read ... like a Tolkien book ... and find something different and something "more"each time. ...more
