What Members Thought

One of my favorite authors--such a great writer--on a very, very interesting subject--Doc Watson who was one of Wyatt Earp's pals. This is novelized history and Mary Doria Russell has obviously done her research. She brings things to life in an amazingly realistic, engaging manner. This is the third book by Russell I've read and have thoroughly enjoyed each one. Go get a Russell book!

Many reviewers praise non-fiction when it reads like fiction - this happens to be a rare example of the reverse. For me, it works - Doc Holliday has become such a mythologized figure that Russell's efforts to sift out the truth of his life make for a very smart inversion of the usual formula. Best of all, Holliday comes alive so vividly that you're left wondering why anyone would feel the need to amp up what was already an extraordinary life.
