A sort of ghost story where a group of writers stay at a retreat where something horrible happened 100 years before. The narrator is writing a novel about those events and the book flits between her novel and the present day happenings. I found this a bit confusing at times, mostly because the characters seemed to have opposite numbers in both stories. However, I enjoyed this spooky tale. And once again Goodman brings a theme of water to the story.

Very enjoyable. I love Carol Goodman's style and she is a master of atmosphere and place. Because I visited Lily Dale some years back I especially loved that part of the story. Her characters are a little less engaging but the story was good and she is fabulous at creating fascinating settings. ...more

Goodman captures the atmosphere of the classic gothic novel very well - her settings breathe with more life than her characters sometimes.
