The book begins with Joss le Guern who has become a town crier in the modern age. Le Guern begins receiving odd messages to read out which we eventually learn are tied to the Black Plague. Chief Inspector Adamsberg becomes involved when backwards 4's begin appearing on doors and then a body is found.
It takes a very long time for anything to happen in this book. After spending the first 100 or so pages learnign about Le Guern he disappears almost entirely from the story which annoyed me. I didn' ...more
