Discovering that reaction to this was muted and mixed left me curious...what could happen in a series that was SO beloved that would fail to be 100% embraced by the fanbase?
And then I started to read...
We always want "more"...more stories, longer stories, stories about side characters and tangental worlds. We want it all to heighten what we know and what we love about the core themes. But what we never want to face...never want to fathom...is that these fictional heroes and fictional adventures ...more

It's difficult to review this. I would prefer to wait until I can see it produced - hopefully it will come to Broadway or I can return to London soon. But for now let me just say this: this script is like returning to old friends, like when you see someone you haven't seen since you were a kid and they're older now and paunchy and balding and you aren't really able to comprehend that this is the same kid you used to climb trees with. Or when you see someone on Facebook from your high school, and

I had very low expectations for this book, and was very prepared to be disappointed. I wavered between giving the book 3 and 4 stars, but probably settled on 4 because it was better than I was expecting. All the heart wrenching complexities of the characters of the Harry Potter world took seven books and thousands of pages to build, there is no way that could happen in short script, but for what it was, I enjoyed it. The play takes follows Harry's son Albus though some of his time at Hogwarts as

Fact: this was fine.
Further fact: I have also read plenty of fanfictions that did this better, so.

So, truly I'm going to give anything "Harry Potter by JK Rowling" 5 stars because a strange, doesn't-feel-like-canon HP book is worlds better than no HP book at all. But truly--this book really doesn't feel like a true HP book, or like JK's writing even. Being a play makes it feel sparse, missing detail, richness, imagery, and background (I guess we'd expect to get these visually in the theater). Maybe the only compelling character is Scorpius, but it seemed a bit frustrating that these two obvi

I read this for a play reading class. It is a continuation of Harry Potter's story--in fact it begins with the very last scene in Deathly Hallows--but it's a play, not a novel. So I can see why some folks don't find this an adequate sequel, since the play format doesn't allow for as much richness in the storytelling as a book does. Yet, I enjoyed reading it. As far as the story goes, it shows us Harry and the others as adults and parents, but it still keeps the story focused on kids--the kids in

I loved being back in the Harry Potter world. However, I don't love time travel as a basis for a story and I wish the conflict had not been Voldemort related but something else. Also Neville was mentioned but he's never seen! It was nice to see Harry struggle with fatherhood and build a relationship with his son. Overall I was enchanted to be back with the characters I love.

...that was an interesting exercise in reliving my childhood.
