Nata a Roma l'8 luglio 1593, Artemisia era figlia del pittore Orazio Gentileschi. Rimasta orfana di madre a soli 5 anni, crebbe nella bottega paterna, dove apprese le tecniche pittoriche, incluso lo stile del Caravaggio che Orazio ammirava.
