What Members Thought
I expected more with this one. Beautiful descriptive writing for the most part, however I felt the story line wasn't really developed as it should have been. Some parts didn't seem realistic. At times I did get bored. However, I did keep in mind this is her first novel. Despite these couple of things, this is an important novel for the world we live in today. The message of immigration, class, culture are among some of the topics explored. I do like the author's writing and are hoping for better

The Jongas from Camaroon were what I imagine immigrants to be - hardworking self sufficient people who are willing to sacrifice a lot to make it in America. I was routing for them all the way - even at times when their situation went from bad to worse. I felt that they had many dreams and attitudes similar to my grandparents who came here in the early 1900s. I did think however that the Edwards were portrayed almost as upper class caricatures - they had every single flaw attributed to that class
