Jack's aunt is out of money, and off go Jack and his butler, Praiseworthy, to the gold fields of California. On the way, the two run across scoundrels and sailors, miners and outlaws.

I do love me some Sid Fleischman stories.

I remember reading and enjoying this in elementary school, and a friend told me she enjoyed reading it with her son, so we tried the audiobook (my 9 y/o, 7 y/o and 5 y/o)—it was so much fun!

Note: There are some very slight cringeworthy references to Indians and women that may warrant discussion. They are, of course, representative of the attitudes from that period in history. I try to not censor this but instead discuss it with my kids.
