The power of friendship, love and hope along with determination, imagination and faith drive this book. A few images and scenes can be difficult for third graders or younger, but most characters are sweet and the unpleasant scenes are very brief. The protests are also something that might be confusing for a younger reader. This won a Newbery Medal, but I think it is a book that a parent should read with his or her child because there is some violence & suffering and repeated descriptions of deat ...more
