4.5 stars for this excellent middle grade/YA historical fiction about Thomas Jefferson's slave children born to his slave Sally Heming. Slavery, consent, freedom, race, racism, patriarchy and how they relate to the founding and independence of America are not easy topics to discuss. This book makes the subject matter accessible for young readers. It should be on every middle school American history reading list.
