The backdrop of the Katyn massacre is a perfect setting for our man Bernie - it's exactly the sort of horror that he thrives in, even when his piece of the puzzle is small. As is all too common for him, he makes choices that are unthinkable outside wartime, but his fluid boundaries under the weight of the regime are what make this series worth returning to again and again.
