Written as a series of journal entries by Colonel Alan Forrester on his expedition to be the first to explore the Wolverine River in Alaska and his wife Sophie left behind in Washington. The entries are interspersed with other historical entries from the time along with photos and letters from the Colonel's great nephew to a museum in Alaska. I enjoyed this book so much, though truth be told, it was a slog at first. It is about an Alaskan expedition into the frontier, think Lewis and Clark go to Alaska. It was well told through letters and journal entries. It resonated with me and I would like to travel into the wild to see what they saw when the world was pure.

This is the kind of book that I usually wouldn't go for. It's about an expedition into Alaska, before European settlement, entirely written as scraps of letters, reports and other communications, partly historical and partly in the present day. It sounds like entirely too much work. Somehow the expedition slowly grips the reader, and it becomes real (with a little bit of magic here and there).
