Maybe 4.5 stars if I could. What amazing throwaway lines on human nature, buried between plot and character building. While sometimes the story lines went on for too long, these characters and their stories were simply just “true”. Ole Hattie and the cash register, the wise Ms Beryl, the loyal Rub, the smug Peter, and of course, the OG “dude”, Sully. Would read this again in a heartbeat, if only to recapture the essence of 1980’s rural America and what it means to be human.
