What Members Thought
As a work of fiction this is probably a little too close to the truth to be described as enjoyable reading. Nevertheless, this tale of slavery and of one woman's quest for a life of freedom is an excellent read. The conditions in which slaves were expected to work and live, including their existence as chattels of the plantation owner, are described graphically. At one point in this book I found myself dreaming about it, and that is rare.

Exceptional. The pacing is taut and suspenseful and the story is both human and epic in scale. Quite a feat!
As I was reading this book, I already decided to read it again. It is beautifully written, the characters are interesting and there is a lot packed in.
