I read this while on a trip home to visit my mother. While we have a completely different relationship than the characters in the novel, Strout's observations about mothers and daughters are mostly universal. The narrator Lucy talks about the need to be ruthless as a writer and Strout holds nothing back. It's a bit frightening (even more so than Olive K.) but beautiful.
