This is a classic B or C for me - "I can see this is good but I don't like it." I'm not sure what it was. I typically love a character-driven novel ...more

I read this while on a trip home to visit my mother. While we have a completely different relationship than the characters in the novel, Strout's observations about mothers and daughters are mostly universal. The narrator Lucy talks about the need to be ruthless as a writer and Strout holds nothing back. It's a bit frightening (even more so than Olive K.) but beautiful. ...more

Funny thing, I really loved this book until Lucy’s mother goes home. From that point on the hospital stay seems long, and it is worse when she gets out of the hospital. But the first 100 pages or so were a masterpiece of Lucy recounting her childhood. Then adult problems overtake her.
