This book, the text of this book, has a certain self-consciousness to it. I really liked this book. Nice language, interesting characters. It was just very enjoyable, and that's it. Nothing that blew my mind, nothing that jumped out and grabbed me. A quick read, not so much in the way of plot, but a nice commentary on poverty, family, and loss. ...more

While she is hospitalized following a surgery, Lucy reflects on her life and relationships. Her mother, with whom she has a strained and complicated relationship, sits by her bedside.

This book doesn't have a traditional narrative arc and is instead told in brief vignettes that are sparse in details but rich in emotion and truth. It led to a good book club discussion about relationships, human nature, and the things that unite and divide us.
