Another very good entry in the Duncan Kincaid-Gemma James series, this story follows the inspectors through the murder of a well-known, but not well-liked, high-ranking policeman. There are many red herrings and much speculation as Duncan and Gemma wade through the evidence and lack therof as they do their jobs, eventually solving the murder, with a surprising end.
Duncan and Gemma become more alive with every entry in the series, and Crombie crafts the connections between books smartly and with great continuity.
