How do you atone for killing someone else's child? Apparently in Native American culture you give them yours. This story starts with a terrible accident and a terrible choice, and follows what happens from then on to the people of the extended families. The child at the centre of it has an important name which extends back for generations, and this becomes part of the tale. Erdrich never disappoints. When one man causes a tragedy in the neighbors’ family, the solution is shocking and painful but in line with the old ways. This story follows the stories of Native families across generations with humor, love and reverence. Interesting story. After a child is killed by accident the family whose father caused the accident agree to share raising their own child with the bereaved parents. This is based on a true story.
The two families live near/in an Indian reserve, and goes back in time to remembered history of the LaRose, the great-great grandmother and namesake of the boy who is raised by the two families.
