Full disclosure: I am a life-long Tolkien geek. Mock me, and I'll cuss you out in Elvish. And then I'll breathe a bit of fire at you.
This is the prequel to The Lord of the Rings. I actually read LOTR first when I was 9 years old (back when dinosaurs walked the earth...) and it was rough going, so I highly recommend reading The Hobbit first. It explains a lot of things that are important to the trilogy. Also, unlike LOTR, this is a children's book. It's not just for children, by any means, but it

I absolutely love J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, and I also highly recommend the audio version narrated by Andy Serkis (who voices Gollum in the Peter Jackson movies).

I enjoyed the story and liked all the adventures Bilbo had. I wshed Tolkein went more into the personalities of all the dwarves. A lot of them were just names. I also thought Gandalf acted rather strangely and not much like a wizard.

I am not sure if I couldn't relate to the "fantasy" world or the lack of female characters. So I gave this book another go at the age of 29. I have seen the movie. This time around, I was much more impressed. The beginning was hilarious and engaging and charming. It felt like a story that was dying to be read out loud and one to read to children. I was surprise ...more

Here we go again with the protagonist passing out and waking up to have the big conflict mostly resolved. (not unlike The Sorcerer's Stone and The Book of Three) Regardless, this is a must-read! An epic adventure to be enjoy. ...more

Read this probably 30 years ago and didn't remember much. Since I recently read the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, though, I wanted to go back and read this to refresh my memory on Bilbo and the hobbits. Enjoyed it much and am looking forward to the new movie coming out soon. ...more
