The intellectual merits of this book far outweigh the narrative merits. I appreciated the investigation of racial passing and intersectionality, but the characters felt at a distance and I never really got into the actual story by the time it was over.

I read a tiny book. Only 120 pages. But boy, those 120 pages packed a wallop.

Passing, by Nella Larsen was written and published in the late 1920s. But it could easily have been written today, almost 100 years later. And that’s pretty sad, considering what it’s about.
