I really love the way Hardy writes, and will definitely read more of him. This could have been five stars but for the fact that I'm pushing myself to read more this year than last. This is not a book to rush. There is one character in this book that I love with all of my heart. I do believe if my husband lived back in Victorian times, he'd have been this man. Or very like him. It was a great reading and my only regret is that I did not read it earlier. It has all the elements that in my opinion makes a great novel. It has great tension, hard to tell how it will end until the final pages, powerful characters, strong emotions and good rhythm. Definitively it is in my top 10 novels I read.
My copy of this book is in Romanian.

My first Thomas Hardy novel. I like stories like this set in the English countryside in a bygone era. Thomas Hardy excelled at bringing the setting to life for me. The principal characters are all quite interesting in their development.
