Stella by Starlight reminded me of one of my childhood reads, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. I read this one as part of the Mock Newbery 2016 challenge, and I'm guessing that others saw the similarities too, resulting on it being the first book of this year's challenge.

This is an excellent middle grade read. I love the story's heroine Stella. She is a character with which most young girls can relate. The story had a good balance of action and deep contemplative moments. It was especially wonderful to see Stella evolve as a writer. I wouldn't mind reading more Stella novels in the future. I think there is more of her story to tell. This is a must-read for tween females.
