Before many of the modern writers in this genre were adding prequels or books to their series about the childhood or early days of their protagonist, Georges Simenon was doing it in the 1940s and doing it well. Per the English title, this is Maigret's first case. Simenon manages to show a less confident, newly married, twenty-six year old Maigret, taking the initiative on a politically sensitive investigation and starting the development of his unique psychological, dogged investigative style.
