My copy has lost the pretty jacket but after being printed more than fifty years ago I would have been surprised to see it. Enjoyable read! *further review pending*

The broken English would confuse students but otherwise it would have been a nice story for them to read.

This book is amazing and I loved it. I read this before, during and after my trip to Thailand. It was helpful for me in understanding life at the Grand Palace and how the laws changed after Anna was there. I also learned about why Thai people bow and about the many different kingdoms who paid fealty to King Mongkut including how the French manipulated control of Cambodia away from him. Anna lives in Thailand during the time of the Civil war in America and it is interesting to read how slavery ex ...more

This book was the basis for the musical "The King and I," but don't let the Broadway association fool you -- there was a very real Anna even though this is a fictionalized work based on her diary. My one quibble is that while the book reads as a wonderful story, I'm not sure how much the 'storytelling' element overtook the biographical one. ...more
