This is a strange book -- its complex story straddles three timelines, and unfolds with rich atmosphere and characters, but ultimately fizzles out and many readers may wind up completely annoyed at the end. The author was inspired to write this after seeing a book about the history of mirrors and how the city-state of Venice held the secret of how to make flat mirrors for almost 200 years.
