Billingham gives an excellent example in this novel of how to build suspense. By the time Thorne and his group get to the Welsh island of Bardsley with two prisoners in tow everyone, including most of the reading audience, are guaranteed to be looking over their shoulders. Not all of the problems are resolved in the end. In fact it looks like Thorne still has quite a bit to worry about.
