You don't read Winton for relaxing or feeling warm and fuzzy, and this book confirms that. Flawed people, especially the three main characters, struggle on with lives that seem mostly hopeless, and the plot itself doesn't really stand alone. Winton's command of language and ability to shine a spotlight on the characters and their situation, and make them believable even while you aren't liking them much is why you read his work, and he doesn't disappoint here.
