The drug cartel violence that's ravaged Mexico over the last 15+ years is so horrific that I've largely shied away from some of the more popular entertainment whose plots are ripped from the headlines (for example, the TV Narcos, or the film Sicario). It felt a little perverse in some way -- so I picked this up somewhat gingerly, planning to give it 20-30 pages to see how it handled things.

Compelling, gripping, fascinating, and eye-opening even as fiction be wise of the depth of the way it shed light on the complexities of the evolving "war on drugs". Loved it.

Winslow's writing about the Mexican drug trade is both immersive and compelling, and while it's fiction, he draws so heavily on truth that it's not even surprising to see life imitate art as it did with El Chapo's recent escape from prison. He's one of the best working in crime fiction right now, and his gritty style is perfect for our seemingly endless slow-motion failure to substantively address the drug war and the associated corruption.
