I read the original Bernie Gunther trilogy 20+ years ago, when they first came out, and was sad that he left that character behind. When he picked the series back up after a long sabbatical, I was ecstatic. But as the books seem to be coming out almost faster than I can keep up with reading them, and I fear the quality has declined. Bernie is forever out of the frying pan and into the fire, and his travails here are no exception. He's always susceptible to the charms of a pretty woman, and the added danger of her being the apple of Goebbels's eye makes kicks off the sort of no-way-out-but-through pickle that's Gunther's specialty. I love his wisecracking charm (in some ways, he is the true successor to Marlowe and Spade) and Kerr's willingness to show both Nazi Germany's ugliness and the plight of mostly decent people tryin ...more
