Although marketed as a mystery, this is more of a straight-up old-fashioned adventure story of the finest kind. It takes place in 1830s India, at a time when the British East India Company functioned as the colonial occupier and administrative entity of Great Britain. Avery is a young officer in Calcutta who has been gambling away the months, waiting for the orders that will send him to a cavalry unit where he might see some action.

Cracking good read, very knowledgeable of India - looking forward to read more adventures of Blake and Avery.
Although an interesting commentary on British East India Company and life in India for a foreigner during the 1830's, the plot was a little thin and hard to get into.
