Astrid Lim
Not as brilliant as Shining Girls, but Broken Monsters is still an engaging read. I love how Lauren Beukes always tried to blend many genres into her books. The mystery here is not that compelling, but I like the main characters enough (especially mother-daughter Gabi and Layla) to enjoy the book decently. The ending left you with questions - I'm ok with it though. Only in some parts there are holes here and there, but the pace is still fast for a mystery/thriller/crime book. ...more

This book is brutal and intense. Brutally intense. Intensely brutal. This is so fucked up. This is also a mind-blowing work of art.

Beukes is a master of dialogue and clever metaphors, including gems like:

He chews on the words like tobacco, something he has to spit out.


and

They're all wired into the same circuit board of tension.


and

... she yanks her shirt out of her pants and uses it to wipe her face. "Fuck's fucking sake !"
