I've been walking along the backroads of England for nine days with Bill Bryson. It's been a pleasant experience, mostly (though, be warned, if you plan to journey with this fellow that he goes off at the drop of a hat, and he has a rather foul mouth to go along with his rather foul temper). This is another good travel book from Bill Bryson. I always enjoy reading his comments on what he is seeing and doing, although because I live in the midst of the Appalachian Mountains, his A Walk in the Woods will always be my favorite!

Not going to finish this ; it’s such a cranky and boring narrative .
He gets off topic over and over and not in a charming way . I’m going to try “ In a Sunburned country “ as it sounds more engaging .

As usual, funny, wry, and compelling me to desire to visit some of the places he visits (not all of them, he makes clear which ones are not worth the time!). More grumpy than previous books, and lots of random griping about England's economy, unpleasant shopkeepers, misspelled signs, inane celebrities, and other things that bother him. I was listening to the excellent audiobook (alas, not Bryson's voice, but a good substitute), but kept having to refer to the text and particularly the map in the ...more
