Man, this book was a downer. Truth to tell, I never finished it, not that I really think it mattered as it was fairly clear the last few chapters would consist of what the previous ones had.

Although I have read or listened to most of Bryson's books, this latest entry consists of little more fairly pedestrian and lightly edited travel notes compiled during Bryson's wanderings, mostly trivialities about what he ate, the buses he rode, the pubs he where he stopped for a drink, the museums he visit

Not going to finish this ; it’s such a cranky and boring narrative .
He gets off topic over and over and not in a charming way . I’m going to try “ In a Sunburned country “ as it sounds more engaging .

Another Bryson book into the log books! Thoroughly enjoyed this one--a rollicking journey through a bunch of small towns, cities, villages, beaches, dales, and historic points around Great Britain. With Bryson's typical insouciant comments and conversations--including his interior dialogues that are quite a hoot. And, not to be left out, a whole lot of historical background and rabbit trails. ...more

In typical Bryson style, Bryson revisits parts of Britain and gives an honest evaluation of the country and its inhabitants. Lots of humor directed at himself as well as others.

As usual, funny, wry, and compelling me to desire to visit some of the places he visits (not all of them, he makes clear which ones are not worth the time!). More grumpy than previous books, and lots of random griping about England's economy, unpleasant shopkeepers, misspelled signs, inane celebrities, and other things that bother him. I was listening to the excellent audiobook (alas, not Bryson's voice, but a good substitute), but kept having to refer to the text and particularly the map in the ...more
