Sciliar was a hugely prolific author of more than hundred books in his native Brazil, only a handful of which have appeared in English. He was born in the southern city of Porto Allegre to Jewish parents who had emigrated from Bessarabia (present day Moldova) just after the Russian Revolution. They settled in a neighborhood called Bom Fim, along with many other Jews fleeing eastern Europe, and this slim book is a kind of magical realist portrait of the Sciliar's childhood neighborhood.
