Barkskins is an enormous forest of a book, 700 pages and 300 years and three continents of loggers and family timber businesses and Native peoples and even a tree hugger or two. Threw This Turkey Back --- two stars for the research she did. Got threw 6 or 20 or so discs on audio.

I LIVE for multi-generational family sagas. This is awful. There are a few glimpes of the real Annie Proulx's writing. Glimpses. Then cardboard cut-outs for characters who have little to help the reader keep them straight in terms of personality, droning history lessons, an occasional nice passage about something, stilted dialogue.

"They call this Queen Anne's war..." is a sadly typical comment.

What an interesting and detailed story of a family of Native Americans, loggers, timber barons, and many more people, all related in some way to forests and trees. The main narrative details the family of Charles Duquet, along with others, and how their history was intimately tied to the forests and forest industry since colonial times up through the early 21st century. Proulx has done an amazing job of bringing together all of the details of what a family in this industry could have experienced ...more
