I should preface this by admitting that I don't care to read memoirs -- for whatever reason, I just have no patience for them. So my struggle with this slim book is that it reads like a fictional memoir, unfolding across three periods in the narrator/author's life. The opening section is set in 1984, and our 6-year-old narrator basically just says what she sees, not having the context or maturity to interpret anything.
