What Members Thought

Gave this one a start, but didn't finish. The story sounds interesting, but I didn't enjoy the writing style.

I had heard about people who found refuge in other countries only to be turned back but have never read anything about it. How life goes from seemingly normal to unimaginable is depicted in a very believable manner. I always think about the enormous loss of life in the Holocaust but almost never go beyond to think about how many families and descendants are scattered around the globe in places their ancestors probably never dreamed of being.

WWII fiction is certainly not happy. How could it be? But most of the WWII stories I’ve read have something beautiful amid all the horror - some glimmer of hopefulness or the indomitability of the human spirit and its will to survive. But this book didn’t have much of that. It’s pretty bleak. The characters don’t find a way to overcome their circumstances. They give up. It leaves me feeling unsettled about the book.
