I can't believe it took me so long to read this book. It was a phenomenal way to evaluate the generational challenges caused by slavery. It is told from different perspectives from characters from several generations. The story starts with English colonizers taking slaves away from their villages and travels through time to modern day ancestors of those slaves. The book begins with two half sisters in Ghana, Effia and Esi, one of whom marries a British colonel and the other is sold in slavery. We then follow their ancestors through many generations. Each chapter is devoted to a different person. The book is very ambitious, covering over 200 years in 300 pages. I felt like it tried to cover too much in a relatively short space. It's not the most upbeat book you'll ever read, but I'll be thinking about it for quite a while. She's an excellent story teller.
