Not exactly what I would have expected from one of the fathers of Realism. Ursule Mirouet is part of of Balzac's Scenes from a Provincial Life, and the story seemed, for about half of the book or more, to unfold predictably enough. A good as gold (and beautiful) girl raised by her benevolent (but aged) godfather in a small French town teaming with petty jealousies.
