This is the third book I have read by Magda Szabo. I read her book The Door back in 2015, and loved it. I am not sure that I can really explain why I like her writing so much, but there is such a haunting quality that shines through, because of Len Rix's superb translation.

A beautiful and at times, heart-breaking story of time and loss. Hungary seems to have no shortage of excellent fiction regarding the war and holocaust, their country's unique historical perspective seems to lend a unique insight to the horrors of that era. ...more
