I've read a lot of noir fiction, and read a lot of translated fiction, and I have to say that this Czech book, now available in English some thirty years after its original publication, just didn't do much for me. That might be because it's heavily grounded in the author's own terrible experiences in post-WWII Prague, where she had a pretty good life until her husband was swept up in a Stalinist show trial and executed.
