The power in the wood isn't some blind, hating beast - it can think and plan, and work towards its own ends. It can see into the heart of men, all the better to poison them.

This was delightful! It was a lot better than I had anticipated! A very pleasant surprise for me. I had read His Majesty's Dragon before, and it was ok but kind of blah, so I wasn't so sure how I would feel about Uprooted. I finished this book with a big smile on my face.

This started out a little slow -- but then it got going, and the going was good. The world-building was wonderful; it's very much out of Polish fairy tales. Agnieszka really developed well over the book; at the beginning, I was a little put off by the bumbling/messiness (it felt overdone and too like "well here's my one character flaw"), but both that and the rest of her character developed very nicely. The Wood was fantastic, especially the Wood-queen, and I loved the Baba Jaga aspects so much. ...more

I thought the pacing was much stronger than in Spinning Silver; the world building was good and Novik is a wonderful storyteller. A little more sex and violence than I like (also more than was in SS), so I would advise this for YA+, not for teens.
