There are a lot of dystopian outbreak books out there, so it would be easy for The Passage to feel a lot like the rest of them. Instead, it stood out. Despite its length, the book moved quickly, easily transitioning from the beginning of the outbreak to almost a century later, with Amy, the central character, being the thread that ties everything together. If you like reading dystopian books, you'll love this one, and if you don't, you still may like it.

This is one of the most frustrating books I have ever read. It took me over a month to power through it. I was going to give up many times. It is densely written & could have used some good editing. There are too many characters to keep straight or care about. Occasionally characters would DIE and I would have no recollection of who they even were. It is dreary and dark and depressing. And yet, I kept reading it. And reading it. Once I was about 40% in, I did not want to quit and powered through ...more

Short answer: if you have read "The Stand" and "The Road" you don't really need another dystopia novel. Especially as long as this one.
Longer answer: It has a slow start, only really got going at the 100 page mark, the plot started to get really interesting at about half way, then had patches of brilliance followed by lapses. And as for the ending: you've got to be kidding me Mr Cronin!!! I finished 766 pages just to find a setup for the next book?? Were you hoping for a Harry Potter-like pheno

It's interesting what a reread of a book I loved can do. This reread did not hold up to my previous rave. It's not surprising that I couldn't remember much of the plot or characters (necessitating that I reread). I kept a character list and kept changing who did what. Who the hell is Zero? I found the book too long and I got impatient and skimmed the last fourth. I hated the cliffhanging chapter endings, they felt too abrupt and I had forgotten them by the time I arrived back to the story line. ...more

Maybe I will give this another chance later but I feel as if I have read books like this already. Mutant creatures escape and start eating people?? Jurassic park worked because we cared so much about the characters but after 100 pages or so this was just annoying. Still i will not delete it yet.
