First and foremost, O'Neil's attitude toward the tribes of South Africa and Swaziland is typical of his time (late 19th century/early 20th century. He thinks of the blacks as either children or savages, and there is language in this book that I consider offensive. Having said that, I thought this book was a good one to understand the times and place. This is an autobiography of a Boer (Dutch descent).
