A fictionalized account of one of the (real) first female Deputy Sheriffs in the US. Stewart's characterization of Constance and her sisters is great. Set in 1914, this appears to be the origins story, so I hope there are more to come. It's pretty freaking delightful. ...more

I might have given this book just 3 stars, except that this is TRUE! This really happened, just a few miles from where I grew up in NJ. Just a few miles from where my grandparents were growing up at the time! These are ACTUAL newspaper articles included. This book was a cover buy for me, which doesn't happen very often. It was a very fast read, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I do want to mention that even though this was shelved in the Mystery section (that's where I picked it up), this is not a mystery. It's historical fiction. This novel is a fictionalized account loosely based on true events (with some embellishments). I was slightly taken aback when I started reading it, but I really like the writer's voice, and the book redeemed itsel ...more
