This was a 4.5 read for me.
A deeply readable gem of a story that had me settled in from the first page to the last.
The words that came to mind when I finished reading were beautifully written, ingeniously plotted and superbly executed.

Hermes and Apollo met in a Toronto bar one night. They started discussing human intelligence and whether humans were superior to animals. Hermes started wondering if animals, with human intelligence would be happier than humans. Apollo made a bet with Hermes that any animal he chose be given human intelligence would die unhappier than humans, if one died happy he would serve Hermes for a year.

I'm not sure I've ever come across a book quite like this one before. At every turn, Alexis managed to surpass my expectations. It was tragic and brutal and beautiful.

This was a pleasant surprise—a book about dogs that isn’t schmaltzy. Far from it, actually. It’s a fast read that nevertheless gets you thinking and manages to pack an emotional punch.
