Argh.

I hated this story. Self-indulgent, self-pitying drivel about a man who is preparing to leave his hard working, patient, and frankly over-tolerant wife, the mother of his two children, because he wants to go out and have sex with younger, fitter, 'more interesting' women.

Conversely, I enjoyed Kureishi's writing style, and there were a couple of sentences that stood out as really beautiful, though they were floating in a pile of shite so they were bound to stand out.

The naked truth could be another subtitle of this short story collection. I appreciated a lot the nude sincerity from these stories, but I did not considered them masterpieces of the genre. Some of them appear to miss the final twist, which I find so important in a short story. This is why they appear unfinished. Besides, the abundance of drugs and alcohol made me to not like entirely the characters from the stories (and I am not at all a puritan).

I hated this book, although there were enough fun turns of phrase that it gets an extra star above the lowest. His contempt for his wife is misogynist and his self absorbed self hatred is boring. I read it as part of a larger collection of stories, but disliked it enough to quit while I was ahead.
